Before earning his MBA from the Duke University Fuqua School of Business, Aric Keck received his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from Michigan State University (MSU). Aric Keck remains a fan of the MSU Spartans football team.

After making their first appearance in the Bowl Championship Series Playoffs last year, the Spartans had a disappointing season in 2016. Starting the season with a 2-0 record and ending a three-game losing streak to longtime rival Notre Dame, fans had reason to be optimistic. Despite some excellent efforts, however, the team found ways to lose its next seven games.

The Spartans finally achieved their only other win by beating the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in November, but their fourth-quarter comeback against the highly ranked Ohio State Buckeyes fell just one point short. The 2016 season was a painful one for both the team and its fans, but the Spartans will have two outstanding quarterbacks returning for the 2017 season who are likely to take the team back to its former success. Brian Lewerke and Damion Terry showed promise last season, but both suffered injuries that kept them on the sidelines.

An experienced businessman, Aric Keck is a Vectra Networks regional manager. Outside of work, Aric Keck stays active by playing tennis. A tennis player’s abilities can be significantly hindered by using the wrong racquet, so it is critical to understand how different configurations affect play. One of the most important decisions that a player must make is the type of strings to use.

The most basic string is the nylon solid core, which is durable and great at maintaining tension. However, this type of string has little give and makes the racquet feel stiff. Synthetic multifilament strings do a much better job of absorbing the impact of the ball, typically making them a more comfortable option that does not sacrifice durability.

For many players, natural gut is the gold standard. These strings, made of intestine, provide an excellent pocket for the ball and do an incredible job absorbing shock, but their durability is fairly limited.

More advanced players sometimes opt for polyester strings, which tend to absorb some of the power generated in a swing. As a result, players can swing harder and faster without worrying about hitting the ball out of bounds. Polyester strings are very durable, but they can lose tension rather quickly.

The Three Basic Tennis Strategies

As a sport played by individuals or teams of two, tennis allows players to develop highly personalized strategies and approaches to the game. However, tennis playing styles can be broken down into three general categories.

The most aggressive style of tennis is implemented by serve and volley players. As the name implies, serve and volleyers use powerful, well directed serves to place their opponents under immediate pressure. Rather than wait for the opponent to return the serve, these players charge the net after serving and attempt to end the point in just two or three shots. When returning serves, these players often utilize the chip and charge tactic, slicing a low return and quickly moving forward.

A similar ideology is embraced by the aggressive baseliner, though these players only use the serve and volley tactic as a change-of-pace play. More commonly, aggressive baseliners use powerful ground strokes to move opponents from side to side. These players stand directly on the baseline, limiting an opposing player’s reaction time. Once the opportunity presents itself, aggressive baseliners do not hesitate to follow a strong, well placed shot forward to finish the point with a volley at the net.

Finally, defensive minded players are often referred to as counter punchers, or grinders. These players often stand several feet behind the baseline and prefer to retrieve their opponents shot, using speed and consistent ground strokes to outlast other players. Counter punchers rarely attack the net or go for outright winners, preferring to draw errors or strategically redirect their opponent’s shots, using their own power against them.

When breaking playing styles down further, the fourth most popular style of play would be the all-court player. This player implements all of the above-mentioned tactics and strategies and may greatly change their approach on a point-to-point basis.
